I have always been very conscientious about dirt and germs. I am what some call a neat freak; I like things neat and orderly; I’m very OCD. I was always the friend who had the hand sanitizer in her purse and the antibacterial wipes in her car. I used to use kitchen disinfecting wipes like they were going out of style because I felt like I was getting our home ‘clean.’ I mean the strong smells of these products made me think I was cleaning and sanitizing in a positive way. But boy was I wrong. Do we really need to use harmful/toxic chemicals in our home for cleaning, beauty, and healthcare purposes? What if there was a different? A natural way. A wayfree of chemicals and toxins that will not only support our body, but help us achieve a dramatic change in our body and overall health?
Having spent my entire life using cleaning products and even body care products that were loaded with chemicals, I didn’t know any better. I was clueless that I was exposing myself and my family to dangerous chemicals, until a friend of mine introduced me to Young Living Essential Oils. I say friend, but we have never met, in person that is. We live in two different states, but we communicate virtually and share our YL experiences with a wonderful group of YL members. So how did I make this connection?
Scrolling through my social media site, I saw a post about an online class about essential oils that my friend, Stephanie, was having. I, of course, was interested in attending the event and learning more about the oils, their uses, and how they could benefit me. You see, I was looking for a natural alternative to traditional methods one might be “prescribed” for supporting different body systems. In particular, I was desperately searching for a “natural way” to address digestive issues and supporting immune health.
To let you in on a little of my health journey, I was diagnosed with having ulcerative colitis in 2012. An extended stay in the hospital, and a colonoscopy confirmed it. So I was given IV fluids, antibiotics, and steroids to try to induce remission. Let’s just say I was on a cocktail of drugs that had so many unwanted side effects, and my body was still in attack mode. I was in a flare, and my body just wasn’t going to come out of it. I was sick. Real sick. Ghostly, pale, dark circles under eyes, skinny sick. While everyone I knew was having babies and growing their family, I was trying so hard to induce remission. Stress set in. I had just got married, and I wanted a baby. I wanted to start growing my family. I wanted to be a mom. I wanted remission, and I wanted remission to stay around for a while.
Fast forward to November 2013. I was finally healthy enough to start expanding my family. Thanksgiving Day, my husband and I found out that we were expecting a baby. And in July 2014, our little Rainbow Baby was born. After the birth, my body decided to attack itself once again. A flare happened and stuck around for quite some time.
Fast forward a few hospital stays later, a new GI doctor, and rounds of steroid tapers, immunosuppresant self-injections, different brands/dosages of aminosalicylates, it’s now 2016. I decided to stop giving myself injections every 2 weeks because of the horrible headaches that accompanied each round. I still hadn’t taken some of the stronger medications my GI had prescribed, and I absolutely refused monthly infusions out of fear and because something just didn’t feel right about going that route deep down. But there I was, battling this ailment without the support of my GI doctor since I declined her recommendations and ultimately tarnished any relationship I had with her. Of course, I could always have surgery to remove my colon and that would so call “cure” me. But, to me, that is far from being a cure. I knew there were other options out there.
So here I am today making decisions about my digestive support and overall health. You might think I’m alone. But, no. No. I’m not alone. I have God on my side. And I have a family who supports me and friends who care. I wholeheartedly believe that it is because of Him that the Essential Oils 101 class appeared on my newsfeed that day. My heart was stirred to learn more because of Him. It wasn’t because of my earthly self because I would have never even thought about supporting health and changing my way of living with EOs. It was and still is all God. All the way. It’s because of my determination and reliance on Him to feel at peace with not conforming to traditional ways of healing, but to live a life beyond the ordinary and pursue something far greater. Something far greater than what manufactured processes can do for my body and health. I am here to tell you that through my faith and trust in my God and in His ways, I have started a brand new way of living. It’s a way of living that not only supports my entire health and wellness but my family’s too. We have started a way of living that is far beyond the ordinary. A way of life that has already proven itself countless times in the 4 months since starting our YL journey to promote better health and wellness.
The night of the class came, and I attended. I was actively involved in the discussion and asked lots of questions just trying to understand all I could about these oils. After the class, I made the decision to join Young Living as a member. I purchased my Premium Starter Kit (PSK) and anxiously waited for it to arrive at my doorstep. It eventually arrived, but I was clueless on how to use the oils in the box. And, to this day, I’m still learning so many different uses for oils. From digestive support to immune support, there are numerous ways I now utilize essential oils.
I also did not realize until I began my journey with Young Living how many toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis. It really is terrifying. Think about it. Candles, hand soap, laundry detergent, bathroom cleaner, floor cleaner, perfume, and toothpaste are all items we use often, but they are also things that are loaded with chemicals that do not support our health and body in a positive way. Of course, this never crossed my mind until I started researching more and more and learning about the different products Young Living offers.
A couple of months after becoming a Young Living member, I took a #makeachange challenge that was inspired by a YL Silver on our team where we would get one new Young Living product we had never tried before, give it a try, and share our thoughts. For three months, I purchased one new product each month, and each product I loved and still use today.
It’s been four months since I made a choice to do a Life 180 to begin living a life beyond the ordinary. I am slowly working to replace items filled with chemicals with nontoxic Young Living products.
- Store brand toothpaste has been replaced with Thieves toothpaste for our entire family, 2-year-old included.
- Store brand mouthwash is no longer in use; we use Thieves mouthwash.
- All of our cleaning supplies were replaced with one cleaner: Thieves Cleaner.
- Our hand soaps are now Thieves foaming hand soaps instead of antibacterial soaps. (These last forever!)
- Instead of reaching for your typical over-the-counter stuff, I ask ‘What oil can be used for that?’
- Candles are no longer lit in our home; we diffuse essential oils that not only smell amazing, but have numerous health benefits too.
- Over-the-counter probiotics/multivitamins are no longer taken; I use Life 9 Probiotic and Master Formula daily.
- We boost our immune system with Ningxia Red. (2-year-old included)
- Cologne/perfume are things of the past, instead we use essential oils. (I personally love Joy EO, and my husband likes Northern Lights Black Spruce EO.)
- YL Children’s Vitamins replace the traditional ones we used to get for our little one.
There are so many products available that can replace your ordinary chemical-filled products. I challenge you to browse the Young Living website (the images on the homepage link to their website) and see what you can find to begin your journey toward living a life beyond the ordinary.
